Come and See

Psalm 66:5 says, “Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.” This verse is a declaration of God’s power and goodness toward His people. This verse beckons us to “come and see.” Come is an invitation to draw near, to view up close, and in this case, the invitation is to see the works of God toward His people. The following verse in Psalm 66 says, “He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot” (Psalms 66:6a). The Lord parted the waters on two occasions for the Israelites. He parted the Red Sea when Moses led Israel out of their slavery in Egypt, and the Lord held back the waters of the Jordan River when the people of Israel crossed over to take possession of the Promised Land. At the time Israel crossed the Jordan River, it was at flood stage. Crossing would have been an impossible task; to pass on dry land would only be achievable by the power of God. Both of these events were “come and see” moments. God’s people were near enough to His power to understand the magnitude of what He was doing on their behalf! They could not deny the power or the magnificence of God interceding for them. Imagine walking through walls of water held back by the wind as your feet shuffle across dry ground. Imagine walking through a river, knowing it is at flood stage, and only the power of God is keeping the water from releasing and sweeping over you and all of those with you. These mighty acts not only brought protection, but very real help to God’s people. God intervened on their behalf to allow them to follow where He was leading them and to bring them safely there. When they reflected on these incredible moments, it would have been a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness.

Come and see moments are followed by come and rejoice moments. The last line of verse 6 says, “There did we rejoice in him,” (Romans 66:6b). The remembrance of God’s power and provision for His people brings rejoicing. Can you remember a moment in your life where God did the impossible? Maybe it was a time when He brought you through a difficult situation and reminded you of His faithfulness. Will you take a moment today and remember what God has done for you?

“Come and see” also reminds us to call others near to view up close what God has done for us. When we share what God has done for us with others, we testify to His great power and love for those who belong to Him. Through our testimony, may others also seek Him.

“I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me” (Psalm 13:6).
